You Are Not Tone Deaf

Seriously, you’re not tone deaf! It’s okay; I know how it started … You’re in third grade, it’s recorder-playing time, and it’s not going so well. At that very moment, you consider yourself tone deaf. You’re sad at first, but as you mature into the fourth grade you laugh it off, and then aggressively avoid karaoke over the years. But you have to trust me; you’re not tone deaf! Since when were third-graders good at music, anyway?
OK—real quick—you might be tone deaf. But the people who are can’t tell the difference between changes in pitch. This isn’t a musical problem; it’s a speech problem. Normally, when we talk, we change the pitch of our voice. If you can pick up things like sarcasm or excitement you’re not tone deaf. But even if you are, there’s help for it!
The cool thing: Speech can be thought of as music. Remember? We actually mentioned this very point in our post about the iPhone 5 commercial; ”The commercial is one giant phrase with the narration being the melody!”
