OVP or EVP, What’s the Difference?

Theresa Regli of The Real Story Group recently presented, “How To: Choosing an Online Video Platform,” which reviews the differences between online video platforms (OVPs) and enterprise video platforms (EVPs). Her perspective and insight was very interesting so we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight  some key points and share with you Viddler’s take on it.

One of the more compelling points addressed: Many businesses dislike the “OVP” label put on them; it’s too limiting in describing the value their business offers. We at Viddler agree, but before we tell you why, we’ll provide you with some helpful background on the topic.

An OVP Is …

According to Streamingmedia.com, Online Video Platforms (OVPs) are a free or fee-based, self-service platform that offers hosting, encoding, customizable and embeddable players, and metrics for organizations that wish to upload and distribute their video content.”

Examples of how businesses typically use OVPs:

  • Advertising and branding
  • Content marketing
  • eCommerce
  • Social media interaction and user-generated content (UGC)

So, What’s an EVP Then?

Enterprise Video Platforms (EVPs) provide services and offerings surrounding tools of integration in order to conduct online video operations that focus primarily on internal-communications i.e., employee communications and training, Web conferences and live event coverage of presentations.

Integration is the key component to the operating principles behind an EVP, so it’s important to ensure the EVP can sync with your Web content system and analytics data, in addition to providing privacy/security functionality to better control where your videos are played.

If your primary focus is to internally communicate using video, focus on how creative the EVP will allow you to be, as well as how easy it is to manage and deliver your videos.

Typical EVP Use Cases:

  • Video conferencing
  • Executive communication / Townhalls
  • Lectures / Training
  • Live events

Why Viddler Is More Than Just an OVP

Custom Development: Viddler can help you create the end-viewer experience your company needs by developing custom features and applications.

Monetization Options: Viddler offers advertising integration, subscriptions services and a contest tool as different approaches to generating revenue from your video content.

Professional Services:  Viddler provides businesses with the tools necessary to better position themselves, as well as better
protect and support, monetize, customize, and better deliver their online videos.

Advanced Security: Viddler offers SSL for delivery; and one of the few to offer this layer of protection on mobile devices as well.

Advanced Privacy: At Viddler, we have the ability to restrict who can play your videos based upon website or IP address.

Account and User Management: Viddler has the ability to create multiple users and accounts with granular control over permissions.

Really, the only thing holding Viddler back from being a considered a “true EVP” is the lack of live streaming capabilities. ALTHOUGH, there are plans to integrate this capability into our future product offering.

So, Is Viddler an OVP or an EVP?

Although Viddler once operated as an OVP and still offers features geared toward this market type, we’re transitioning into this newer world of EVPs.

We like to call ourselves The Online Video Solutions Provider for Businesses. A bit wordy, yes, but we aim to make things as implicit as possible, and our clearly-stated motto best serves the marketplace, as it presently stands.

We hope this overview provided a better understanding of how the online video industry has evolved, and how it will continue to develop. …
