Spoiler Alert: It depends on how you are using Video.
How Viddler Went from YouTube Competitor to Enterprise Solution Provider
Viddler’s co-founder Donna DeMarco, sheds some light on when it makes sense to use Viddler, YouTube, or use both together during an interview with Jason Verdelli of Phase 2 Solutions.
Why it’s difficult to compare online video platforms
There’s something funny about the way we view online video platforms. We tend to pin them all against each other, comparing platforms on the same scale. What we don’t realize is that you can’t compare platforms that work toward different goals, in the same way you can’t compare apples to oranges. We constantly get the question, “Is Viddler an alternative to YouTube?” This is difficult to answer, as it really depends on how you are using video.
So, how can these platforms work together?
Savvy marketers like Gary Vaynerchuk have cracked the code—at least as far as social networking and video are concerned. In his latest book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, he describes his odyssey with online video, including early efforts to create a memorable experience with Wine Library TV.
At 12:20 of the video interview, Donna describes how Gary utilized Viddler back in 2007. He used Viddler for custom branding and utilized the timeline commenting feature to help sell the wines he was talking about.
Donna explains how Gary’s use of Viddler has changed, ”Today, as Gary has moved into VaynerMedia, his goal at this point is eyeballs, eyeballs, eyeballs.” YouTube is now the obvious choice for generating awareness. While YouTube is the primary platform of choice for VaynerMedia, Viddler makes sense for immediate interaction, privacy, and internal communications.
The moral of the story
If you want to use video to generate brand awareness for an unlimited audience, YouTube and Facebook are great tools. If you just want to embed videos on a website, there are lots of basic player options like Vimeo. If you’re looking for interactive video, and managing secure video assets for your knowledge base or controlled publication, then Viddler is an amazing tool.
Let’s stop the “either/or” thinking. By clearly defining your goals for using video, key differences between online video platforms become more apparent.
